More dog food recalls - acetaminophen and salmonella contamination

According to API, the FDA is investigating a Texas laboratory’s finding of acetaminophen in dog and cat food. Horrifyingly, this is the fifth contaminant found in pet foods during the past 2 1/2 months. Acetaminophen can be toxic or lethal to pets. At least five dog and cat food samples submitted by worried pet owners and pet food manufacturers contained varying levels of the pain reliever.
The contaminants were found in foods that are still being sold and have not been recalled. According to the news source I read, these dog food companies were given this information over a month ago, but have not yet issued recalls. This goes to show that dog food still being sold in the stores may be contaminated and may be lethal to your dog.
In another story I read, Doane Pet Care Co. is recalling a batch of food it sent to stores in Virginia, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina, and Ohio, due to salmonella contamination.
As I’ve said before, making homemade pet food for your dog is the only safe alternative. Otherwise, you are playing russian roulette with your dog’s life. I list free pet food recipes on this blog, but to really get a complete understanding of what kind of foods you should be serving your dog, along with serving sizes and nutrients you should add, you really need to get John Miller’s book on homemade dog food. It is the best book I’ve found on homemade dog food. Many people have told me that they don’t have the time to make their dogs food, but it really only takes me an hour or two each weekend to make food for my dogs. An hour or two each week is worth it to ensure that my dogs won’t die from what I feed them.
With all this controversy about commercial dog food, you should also get the Dog Food Secrets Book to learn more about the problems with commercial dog food, even before this latest recall, and how all commercial dog food shortens dogs’ lives. It was a real eye opener for me. It also allows me to debate with my friends who make fun of me for making homemade dog food for my dogs, and say I’m just spoiling them.
I hope all of your dogs are well. Please let me know in the comments if you hear of any more recall news, or if you would like to share dog food recipes.

As the author of Food Pets Die For: http://www.newsagepress.com/foodpetsdiefor.html and Protect Your Pet:
http://www.newsagepress.com/foodpetsdiefor.html I have researched/investigated the commercial pet food industry for over seventeen years. What is being used is garbage, material that should be sent to landfill not used in pet food. I feed my pets a homemade diet and have for many years. All are very healthy and happy and at least I know what I am feeding them.
When you consider that diseased material from slaughterhouse facilities, road kill, zoo animals and even euthanized companion animals can be used as sources of protein in pet foods it gives you an indication of the quality of the ingredients that are used. You also have drugs, antibiotics, hormones, and even pentobarbital, a euthanizing drug are all making their way into these foods. In testing the FDA/CVM found low levels of pentobarbital in a number of dry commercial dog foods. They tested because they had received complaints from veterinarians stating it was taking more of this drug to euthanize dogs. THIS IS A DRUG AND SHOULD NOT BE IN PET FOOD IN ANY AMOUNT. When I contacted Dr. Sundlof head of the FDA/CVM and asked what steps they were planning to take to remove this drug from the foods his reply was “This drug is not approved for use in pet food; so it should not be present in these foods. That being said, CVM is not planning to undertake any special enforcement effors to detect pentobarbital in pet food.” This gives you an indication of how well they are overseeing the foods that we are feeding our pets.

I think we need to stop importing foodstuffs from China period. Not worth the risks.

Not only that, but most ingredients in store-bought brands are low grade, non-nutritious filler, or even worse, actual poison! No joke.
The Pet Food Industry doesn’t care.
Every dog and cat owner should learn about the dreadful normal ingredients to be on the safe side.

that’s too bad, i hope not many animals were hurt by this

Sadly the way to prevent this is often to increase animal testing. I took part in some research similar to this as part of Cell research (to avoid animal testing) but that’s still got a few years yet.

I think it’s just better to make your own dog food now,you can’t trust commercial dog food, actually all the food we eat we should just grow and prepare ourselves it’s the only way of knowing for sure whats in it!

Thanks for sharing the important info. If we keep pets first and warn other pet owners of the potential dangers, we can get rid of the dog food companies that quite frankly don’t give a damn.
